Letter from President Donald J. Trump on the occasion of the 66th anniversary of Libya’s independence

Dear Mr. Prime Minister:

Please accept my best wishes as you celebrate Libya’s 66th year of independence on December 24, 2017.

On this occasion, let me underscore that the United States stands with the Libyan people as you seek to move beyond the legacy of more than 40 years of dictatorship, to establish inclusive institutions, to promote stability throughout the country, and to deny safe haven to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and other terrorists.  The signing of the Libyan Political Agreement two years ago was an important step toward overcoming Libya’s divisions and building a more prosperous future for the Libyan people.  The Agreement remains the only viable framework for a political solution throughout the transitional period.

The United States reaffirms its firm commitment to supporting the Government of National Accord and all Libyans who seek a unified country through national political reconciliation.  To defeat ISIS and other terrorists, provide security for the Libyan people, and address their urgent economic and humanitarian challenges, Libya needs unity.  The United States will continue to work with Libya, the United Nations, and international partners to promote a more stable and secure future for all Libyans.

Donald J. Trump
